Can I claim tax relief on home renovation in Ireland?

There is no general home renovation tax credit currently open to new works. The main reliefs available relate to Help to Buy for new builds and self-builds, rented residential relief for landlords, and the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant which is a grant rather than tax relief.

The Home Renovation Incentive, which gave an income tax credit on qualifying works, closed to new works some years ago and is not available for current projects. Homeowners should budget on the basis of grants rather than tax credits.

Landlords can generally deduct repair and maintenance costs against rental income, while capital improvements are treated differently and may instead affect the base cost for capital gains tax. Take specific advice on which category your works fall into.
