Do I need permission for a front boundary wall?

A wall, gate or fence at the front of a house is exempt only up to a limited height, commonly 1.2 metres where it fronts a public road. Higher structures, or capped walls exceeding the limit, need permission.

The regulations distinguish between boundaries fronting a public road and boundaries elsewhere in the curtilage, with a lower height allowance at the front. Height is measured from the ground level on the higher side.

Capping, piers and railings all count towards the overall height. Materials also matter: the exemption for a wall of a type other than plastered block, brick or stone is more restricted.

Practical considerations

  • Check the height limit applicable to your boundary position
  • Confirm the wall is entirely on your own land
  • Do not obstruct required sightlines at an entrance
  • Consider foundation depth near existing trees
