Checklist for entrance gates
Check the following:
- Overall height does not exceed 2 metres, including any pillars
- Sightlines at the entrance are not obstructed when the gates are open or shut
- Gates open inward within the curtilage rather than swinging out over the public road or footpath
- Automated gate mechanisms meet relevant safety standards
- The entrance itself has any necessary separate consent from the roads section for a new or altered access
- The property is not subject to a specific condition restricting the entrance design
On a busy or fast road, ask the local authority to confirm the required sightline distances before finalising the position of gate pillars, since retrofitting pillars set too close to the road is a costly mistake.
Rural and farm entrances
Field and farm gate entrances used for agricultural access have their own considerations under agricultural exemptions, and it is worth checking with the council separately if the entrance also serves agricultural traffic in addition to a domestic driveway.
