Do I need planning permission for rooflights?

Rooflights that sit close to the plane of the roof are generally treated as exempt on a standard house, but dormer windows are not, and works to a protected structure or in an ACA need permission.

A conservation-style or standard rooflight installed flush with the roof covering does not usually alter the appearance materially. A dormer projects from the roof plane, changes the roof profile and generally requires permission.

Where the rooflight serves a converted attic room, Part B may require it to be an escape window with a minimum clear opening and a maximum sill height above floor level.
