What the fee covers and how to pay
Keep these points in mind when budgeting for an objection or appeal:
- Confirm the current local authority submission fee directly with the planning department before submitting
- Pay by the method the council accepts (cheque, postal order, online payment, or in person, depending on the authority)
- Keep a receipt as proof the fee was paid, in case of any query about validity
- Understand that the local authority submission fee is separate from, and smaller than, the An Coimisiún Pleanála appeal fee
- Check the appeal fee amount directly with An Coimisiún Pleanála if you intend to appeal a decision
- Note that certain categories of appellant (such as prescribed bodies) may be exempt from fees
Fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the application or appeal.
When fees do not apply
No fee is charged simply for viewing a planning file or attending a council's public counter to inspect documents — the fee only arises when you formally lodge a written submission or an appeal. Informal contact with a planning officer to ask questions about a proposal is also free.
