Can I install solar panels on a protected structure?

Not under the standard exemption. Solar installations on a protected structure, or within its curtilage where the character is affected, require planning permission, and location away from principal elevations is usually expected.

Planning authorities generally look for installations that are not visible from the public realm — rear roof slopes, outbuildings, or ground-mounted arrays screened by existing planting or walls.

A section 57 declaration can confirm in advance what would and would not materially affect the character of the structure, which is useful before spending money on a design.

Options often accepted

  • Panels on a modern outbuilding or garage roof
  • Ground-mounted array in a screened position
  • Rear roof slope not visible from the public road
  • Solar thermal on a secondary structure
