Do I need permission for a satellite dish or antenna?

One satellite dish on a house is generally exempted development subject to size limits and a restriction on siting it on the front wall or roof slope facing a public road. Additional dishes or larger units need permission.

The exemption covers one dish within a maximum diameter, positioned other than on the front of the house or on a roof slope facing the road, and not above the ridge.

Protected structures and architectural conservation areas are again treated more strictly, and apartment leases often prohibit dishes regardless of the planning position.

Conditions to observe

  • One dish only under the exemption
  • Diameter within the stated limit
  • Not on the front elevation facing a road
  • Not above the highest part of the roof
