Checklist for an exempt heat pump installation
Check the following before installation:
- The external unit's size stays within the exemption's volume or capacity limit
- It is sited to the rear or side of the house, not the front
- Minimum distance from the boundary is respected to manage noise
- Only the permitted number of units is installed at the property
- The property is not a protected structure or in a conservation area
- Manufacturer noise ratings are checked against any distance conditions
A reputable installer registered under the relevant SEAI grant schemes will normally already be familiar with the current siting and noise conditions attached to the exemption.
Noise and neighbour considerations
Even an exempt installation can attract a noise nuisance complaint if it is placed close to a neighbour's bedroom window, so consider the siting carefully and, where in doubt, check with the local authority before finalising the installation position.
