Steps to confirm ACA status
To check whether your house is within a designated ACA:
- Locate your local authority's current Development Plan on its website
- Find the schedule or appendix listing designated Architectural Conservation Areas
- Use the council's interactive mapping viewer, if available, to check the boundary against your address
- Read the relevant ACA character statement to understand what features it protects
- Contact the planning department directly if the boundary or online mapping is unclear
- Separately check the Record of Protected Structures, since your building could also be individually protected
Why boundaries can be surprising
ACA boundaries are drawn to capture areas of coherent historic character, which can mean neighbouring properties fall on different sides of the line despite looking similar, so always verify against the actual mapped boundary rather than assumptions about the surrounding streetscape.
