Is there a grant for a heat pump in Ireland?

Yes. SEAI offers a heat pump systems grant, but it is conditional on a technical assessment by a registered assessor confirming the home's heat loss indicator is low enough, which usually means insulation upgrades come first.

The technical assessment establishes the heat loss indicator for the dwelling. If the figure is above the threshold, the assessor sets out the fabric upgrades required to bring it within range before a heat pump grant can be paid.

This ordering is deliberate. A heat pump running in a poorly insulated house works at higher flow temperatures, delivers poor efficiency and produces high running costs, so the scheme requires the fabric to be addressed first.

Sequence that works

  • Book the heat pump technical assessment
  • Complete any required insulation and airtightness works
  • Install the heat pump with an SEAI registered installer
  • Complete the post-works BER and claim
