Do I need a BER before getting SEAI grants?

Most SEAI grant routes require a BER assessment after the works, and whole-house schemes also require a pre-works assessment or home energy survey. Standalone solar PV grants do not require a BER.

For individual insulation and heating grants, SEAI generally requires a post-works BER so the improvement can be recorded. The cost of that BER is normally grant aided.

Under the One Stop Shop route, the provider carries out a technical survey and pre-works assessment to design the upgrade package, and a post-works BER to confirm the outcome. Solar PV applications are handled separately and do not require a BER.

Practical sequence

  • Apply and receive grant approval before starting works
  • Use an SEAI registered contractor
  • Complete the works within the approval period
  • Arrange the post-works BER and submit the claim
