What housing adaptation grants are available?

Local authorities run three main schemes: the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability, the Mobility Aids Grant and the Housing Aid for Older People, all means tested and paid on completion of approved works.

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability funds works such as ground floor bathrooms, ramps, stairlifts and extensions where needed for a person with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability. An occupational therapist report is usually required.

The Mobility Aids Grant covers a narrower list of basic items such as grab rails and level access showers, and Housing Aid for Older People covers essential repairs like roofing, rewiring and window replacement.

How the schemes work

  • Apply to your local authority before starting works
  • Means tested on household income
  • Grant percentage reduces as income rises
  • Paid on completion against vouched invoices
