What is a 7-day notice?

A 7-day notice allows work to start on a project that needs a fire safety certificate before the certificate has issued. It is lodged with the building control authority together with the fire safety certificate application and supporting documents.

The notice is only relevant to works that require a fire safety certificate — apartments, commercial and public buildings — not to a single dwelling house. It exists so that a project is not held up waiting on the certificate process.

The risk sits with the developer. If the certificate is later granted subject to conditions requiring design changes, work already built may have to be altered at your cost.

  • The 7-day notice itself with the prescribed fee
  • A valid fire safety certificate application
  • Statutory declaration and supporting drawings
  • Certificates and appointments as required for the works
