What certificate do I need for electrical work in Ireland?

Controlled electrical works must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor and certified with a Completion Certificate issued through Safe Electric. ESB Networks will not energise a new connection without it.

Controlled works include a new installation, a new distribution board, and works to bathrooms and other special locations. The certificate confirms the installation was tested against the national wiring rules.

Keep the certificate with your handover documents. It is required for connection, requested at sale, and often needed by insurers after a fire claim.

When you need one

  • New house or new supply connection
  • Consumer unit replacement or rewire
  • Electrical works in a bathroom or outdoors
  • EV charger and solar PV installations
