What is the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant?

It is a local authority grant for refurbishing a property that has been vacant for the required period and was built before a set date, payable for a home you will live in or rent out, with a higher rate available for derelict properties.

The grant is administered by local authorities under the Croí Cónaithe towns fund. It supports bringing vacant and derelict housing back into use, either as your principal private residence or as a property offered for rent.

You must be able to show the property has been vacant for the required continuous period and was constructed before the qualifying date. A higher amount applies where the property is confirmed as derelict, usually supported by a structural report.

What applicants usually need

  • Proof of vacancy, such as utility records for the vacant period
  • Proof of ownership or a contract to purchase
  • Independent report on the condition and works required
  • Tax clearance and local property tax compliance

How it is paid

The grant is paid on completion against vouched costs, so it does not fund the works up front. Grant approval does not remove the need for planning permission or building regulations compliance where the works require them.
