What the percolation test measures and why it matters
Key points to understand about a T-test:
- It measures the rate the soil absorbs water, expressed as a T-value
- A lower T-value (fast drainage) generally needs a smaller percolation area
- A higher T-value (slow drainage) needs a larger percolation area, or may rule out a traditional system
- It is normally carried out at multiple locations across the percolation area to check consistency
- It must be combined with a trial hole assessment of soil type and depth to bedrock or water table
- Very fast-draining, shallow or fissured ground can fail the assessment even with a good T-value, due to poor filtration
- Results feed directly into the design of the percolation area or polishing filter size
Because groundwater levels and soil conditions can vary seasonally, tests are best carried out and interpreted by an experienced assessor rather than relying on results from a different time of year or a neighbouring site.
What happens if the site fails
If the percolation test and trial hole assessment show the ground cannot safely treat and disperse wastewater with a standard septic tank system, the assessor will usually recommend an alternative such as a proprietary secondary treatment system with a smaller polishing filter, a raised or engineered percolation bed, or in some cases conclude the site is unsuitable for on-site treatment altogether.
