How to handle a request for further information
When you receive an RFI, it helps to:
- Read every point requested carefully and address each one specifically
- Engage your architect or agent promptly rather than leaving it late
- Commission any additional reports or surveys needed without delay
- Check whether the response needs to be advertised again for public comment
- Respond well within the six-month deadline to avoid deemed withdrawal
- Keep a copy of the full response and proof of submission to the council
- Ask the planning officer for clarification if any point in the request is unclear
A well-prepared, complete response gives the best chance of a straightforward grant once the council resumes its assessment.
Why councils issue further information requests
RFIs are common and are not necessarily a sign that an application will be refused; they are the normal mechanism by which councils resolve outstanding technical, design or environmental questions before making a final decision, and a well-answered RFI often leads directly to a grant.
